As of yesterday (Sunday 1 July) smoking in any enclosed or substantially enclosed workplace is against the law. On the Shoeburyness compound this means:

• The only designated smoking area is the new shelter by the substation.
• Not in the gatehouse porch. Barry has asked me to say this twice. Not in the gatehouse porch.
• Not in the pool vans, including with the window down.
• Not anywhere near Building 8, for reasons that should not need explaining.

Marconi Court smokers: the bench by the Core 1 loading bay is still outdoors and still fine. Please use the bin.

Is the substation shelter the one that doesn't have a roof? Asking for a colleague who doesn't smoke but does stand next to people who do.

It has a roof. There's a gap between the roof and the walls, which is ventilation, which is the law. It isn't meant to be comfortable.

Update: someone has put a chair in the shelter. The chair is fine. The cushion on the chair is from the Blackwater meeting room at Marconi Court and needs to go back.
