 Hey!

Has someone you love -- maybe a parent, or your gran -- been
getting worked up about "5G", the next big phone upgrade that's
coming in a few years' time? It's easy to worry about something
new, especially if you're not sure how it works. The good news
is that 5G is genuinely nothing to be scared of -- and YOU are
the best person to explain it, because you actually understand
phones. Here are five things you can tell them.

 1. IT'S JUST THE NEXT VERSION OF 4G.
You're probably reading this on a 4G phone right now -- streaming
music, watching videos on the bus, sending snaps. 4G has been
rolled out across the country and is used by millions of people
every single day, and it hasn't harmed anyone. 5G is simply the
next version of the same idea, and it will be tested for years
before anyone is allowed to sell it.

 2. THE "NEW" AIRWAVES AREN'T NEW AT ALL.
Some of the radio frequencies 5G will use (around 700 MHz) are
the very same airwaves that used to carry ANALOGUE COLOUR
TELEVISION -- the telly your gran watched for fifty years. When
the country finished switching to digital TV in 2012, those
airwaves were freed up for other things. So this isn't a strange
new ray: it's the same part of the spectrum that beamed
Coronation Street into her living room for most of her life.

 3. IT'S ACTUALLY WEAKER THAN THE OLD TV MASTS.
Here's the bit grown-ups find surprising. Those old television
transmitters pushed out HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of watts, day and
night, for decades. People have lived right beside them the whole
time, and study after study has found no consistent pattern of
harm. A 5G cell puts out a tiny fraction of that power. If sixty
years of enormous TV masts didn't make the neighbours ill, a
 little 5G antenna certainly won't.

 4. THE CLEVER NEW AERIALS USE LESS POWER, NOT MORE.
This is the coolest part. Old phone masts spray their signal in
every direction at once, like a bare light bulb. 5G masts and 5G
handsets use new "beam-forming" aerials that aim the signal
straight at each other, like a torch. That means they can use
LESS power to do the same job -- which is better for your battery
AND means there is less signal flying around, not more.

 5. SO IF YOU'RE WORRIED, GET 5G SOONER, NOT LATER.
Here's the twist that'll blow your gran's mind. The phones that
transmit at the HIGHEST power are the oldest ones -- the ancient
2G and 3G bricks -- because they have to "shout" to reach the
mast. Newer phones are far cleverer, and use only the tiny bit of
power they actually need. So if someone genuinely wants LESS radio
signal around them, the best thing they can do is upgrade to a
modern 5G handset as soon as it is available, and stop using an
obsolete 2G or 3G phone. Newer really is lower.

 THE BOTTOM LINE.
5G is well-tested, it reuses old and familiar airwaves at much
lower power than the tellies we all grew up with, and its new
aerials mean less signal, longer battery life, and faster snaps.
There is nothing here to fear -- and quite a lot to look forward
 to.

Now go and put the kettle on for your gran. She'll come round.
